Adam Cummings is the Managing Director of Apeiron Digital Pro. Apeiron Digital Pro (ADP) is a full service creative digital media company that creates compelling visual content through photography, videography, digital cinematography and graphic design. After years of working in the digital media industry, Adam has acquired a lot of knowledge, especially from an administrative standpoint. Naturally, he stands as an amazing cinematographer - producing short films and promotional videos for a range of clients from musicians to the Marketing Department of the UWI. He is driven by his desire to develop (pioneering new ideas and realizing opportunities in digital media and business). Adam is also an athlete who has represented both Munro College in High School Championships and Jamaica internationally. Adam tries to believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

The questions for this week are:

  • How did your entrepreneurial journey begin?

  • What do you enjoy most about your entrepreneurial journey thus far?

  • You’re an athlete, how do you balance your time between athletics and running a business?

  • The Digital media industry has grown tremendously over the past few years, how do you manage to keep up with your competitors and what separates you from them?

  • Doing what you love and loving what you do is very important to one’s success, how has this idea contributed to your success as an individual and the success of your business?

  • What have you learnt on your journey that you can share with aspiring entrepreneurs?

My first question to each Entrepreneur is always about their entrepreneurial journey, how it began. Adam answered by saying “I have always had an inner knowing that what I want to do with my life involves me owning my own businesses (yes, with an ’s’). I have always had a keen eye for opportunities and perspectives on things that people saw as unimportant. The funny thing about entrepreneurship is that you have to be able to see a million dollars in an idea that most other people just won’t see anything in at all.”

He went on to further state that “I remember as far back as maybe grade 1 in prep school when my teacher gave a bunch of us Christmas cards made from our own art to sell to parents in the parking lot at my school. I was the only person to realize that I could charge a markup and still give my teacher all the money she expected from the cards and everybody would be happy!”

At some point in time every entrepreneur enjoys something about their journey, whether it is that they enjoy the profit that is being made, putting smiles on their customers faces or the fact that they are their own boss. Adam response to what he enjoys most about his journey thus far is “What I enjoy about my journey so far is the process of figuring out how everything works. There are definitely ups and downs in being an entrepreneur! You will definitely get many things wrong when you’re an entrepreneur and in my opinion, it’s getting lots of things wrong that makes getting things right more enjoyable.”

He also stated that “When you get something wrong 9 times, getting it right on the 10th try makes all those 9 other times fade away.”

Like many other entrepreneurs, Adam has more than one interest. Adam has had a tremendous career as an athlete over the years, I remember watching him on both the television and live at the National Stadium running. In addition to being a track star, Adam is the brains behind Apeiron Digital Pro which has absolutely no relations to tracks. When asked how does he balance his time between athletics and running a business, Adam said “Sometime I wish there were 2 of me. It’s actually not easy to balance them both because they're both equally important to me. In business, it’s always important to build a great team and at Apeiron Digital Pro, I’m sure that’s what makes everything in my personal struggle to balance work and my athletic career a reality.”

It is important for every Entrepreneur to know what separates them from their competitors. In keeping up with his competitors Adam says “it’s just like if I were a DJ (disk jockey) I couldn’t keep playing the same songs over and over because that’s what I know. I have to listen to the radio and to albums when they’re released just to keep up and update my catalog.” He went on to further state that “You have to keep learning and experience the changes from a user's standpoint then try to incorporate that into your business. Sometimes I just scroll through Instagram or sit and watch YouTube videos and see what I like and learn how to do those things.”

Steve Jobs said that “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” Doing what you love and loving what you do is very important to one’s success, this idea has contributed to Adam’s success and he states that “it just makes what I do easy because I want to do it.”

And as usual I ask each entrepreneur to share with you my readers and entrepreneur aspirants about what they have learnt. Adam responded by saying “I have so many things that I’ve learnt that I would want to share with aspiring entrepreneurs. The most recent thing that has become very important to me is to be consistently good at the basics. Then you have to not be afraid to try new things and get them wrong. You have to come out of your comfort zone to make any realistic progress. Then add those new things that you learn to the list of basics that you do well consistently.”
